Engineering Tomorrow and Countering Threats to Licensure

Abstract: Rapid advances in technology, new materials, and demands to address sustainability, resiliency, and climate change are all changing how we practice. Threats to licensure, shrinking credit hours, and commoditization are also affecting the profession. This session will explore ASCE’s efforts on how to best prepare civil engineers to address these challenges and advance the profession. Participants will leave the session with empowered to take responsibility for the future of the civil engineering profession and their own professional advancement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how the Engineer Tomorrow initiative is advancing ASCE Policy Statement 465, the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (CEBOK) and other ASCE initiatives.
  • Explore opportunities ASCE is considering to recognize attainment of the CEBOK for civil engineers’ professional advancement.
  • Acknowledge that professional licensure is under attack and learn what ASCE is doing to counter those threats.
