Modernizing Civil Engineering through Machine Intelligence
This session aims to highlight how modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are distant to transform the civil engineering arena. AI and ML are universal tools that have been proven effective in various domains (medicine, space exploration etc.) but remain rarely used within civil engineering. Noting the construction industry's inertia towards change, automation will not only open up new opportunities for next gen engineers but will also enable us to devise unique and affordable solutions to realize new heights in constructions. The goal of this session is to educate researchers, practitioners, students and officials on the merit of using AI and ML in our domain with special attention to be paid to better the performance of construction materials and develop new structural systems to overcome ongoing and future challenges our industry will face in the future.
- Introduce AI and ML to the civil engineering industry.
- Learn proper methods of leveraging AI and ML in various applications (i.e. durability, fire resistance, chemical exposure etc.).
- Highlight case studies on successful AI applications to promote R&D efforts and to encourage students and practitioners to start adopting AI and ML as a new mean of analysis/assessment, together with traditional methods (i.e. testing, FE simulations, analytical derivations).
