The Need to Fulfill CEBOK3 for Responsible Charge
As stated in ASCE Policy Statement 465 (PS 465), the PE license is the legal authority to practice engineering, but no longer signals that a civil engineer is prepared for responsible charge. The CEBOK3 defines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that all civil engineers should strive for to meet their professional obligations when serving in responsible charge. The CEBOK3 will be explained, with examples of how civil engineers can use the document for their career development.
- Understand how CEBOK3 relates to ASCE’s policy on the “Civil Engineering BOK and the Practice of Civil Engineering” (PS 465).
- Understand what the CEBOK3 is, why it matters for every civil engineer’s career development and how civil engineers can use the CEBOK3 as a hands-on guide throughout their careers.
- Understand what it means to be in responsible charge and why the PE is not enough, including understanding how certification would validate fulfillment of the CEBOK and why it is important for future civil engineers.
