Licensed in both engineering and architecture, Aaron Mazeika leverages his experience across disciplines to produce
work that integrates advanced design and structural systems. He leads SOM’s structural practice in implementing
innovative structural systems, particularly for tall buildings, and in expanding the groups’ presence in China.
Aaron has overseen the structural design of more than 30 high-rise towers in China, including the Greenland
Nanjing Jiangbei Supertall, which features distinctive arches that redistribute gravity loads to corner mega-columns,
enhancing the overall efficiency of the structural system. He has also led the structural design for 800 Fulton Market
in Chicago, a mixed-use office tower distinguished by its external steel braced frames, engineered to resist wind
loads while flexing to accommodate thermal movements due to Chicago’s harsh climate.
“True for all building scales, a fully integrated design approach wherein the architecture and structure of a building
is developed together in a mutually supporting manner, yields designs that are highly efficient, expressive, and
naturally elegant.”
With a diverse, multidisciplinary background that includes post-graduate experience teaching in China, Aaron
lectures and participates in studio teaching at academic institutions around the world, focusing on the applications
and intersections of engineering practice and design thinking.
