CI Safety Presentation: Putting Safety into Practice

The construction industry has made great strides to improve safety on jobsites, yet continues to experience a large and disproportionate number of worker injuries and fatalities compared to other work industries. As the industry looks for ways to improve construction site safety, attention is being focused on best practices and the development of innovative approaches to keeping workers safe. Current ASCE documents provide direction on safety for civil engineers to follow, and indicate a need to start addressing safety during planning and design. This technical presentation will provide an overview of the safety guidance provided by ASCE as well as examples of recommended practices for ensuring safe construction sites. The presentation incorporates the knowledge and experience of the ASCE-CI Construction Safety Committee and is recommended for all current and future civil engineers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the construction industry’s safety performance and explain the importance of addressing safety throughout a project’s lifecycle.
  • Describe how safety is addressed in present ASCE documentation such as the Code of Ethics, Policy Statement on Safety, and Body of Knowledge.
  • Explain the fundamental pillars of safety as applied to civil engineering projects.
  • Provide examples of how to successfully address safety on project sites.
