CI Session #2: Little Island Park (Pier 55) on the Hudson River - Design, Fabrication and Delivery
Little Island (Pier 55) is an iconic addition to the Hudson River Park at 14th Street in the Meatpacking District of New York City. Parametric Design was used to enable a digital fabrication process to seamlessly transition from design concepts and geometry to physical reality. Design models were passed directly to contractors and fabricators for use in a robotically driven foam milling process to create formwork and bend rebars. The result is a structural sculpture on the Hudson River that supports lush landscaping and varying topography that creates a fantastical new space for the public to enjoy.
- Review parametric design that was used to enable a digital fabrication process to transition design concepts.
- Understand planning that allowed unique precast elements.
- Learn the challenges presented by this innovative project and how they were met with the use of innovative construction materials and methods.
