SEI Session #1: Designing with Data

This session is aimed at practicing engineers interested in leveraging data for improved design and delivery of projects, whether they be large infrastructure, iconic structures, or commercial and/or residential buildings.  The impact of both data generation in design and ‘capture’ from the built environment has the potential to revolutionize the industry, but the transition from more ‘traditional’ approaches to structural design and this ‘Big Data’ environment is a process to be approached with a balance of enthusiasm and caution.

Learning Objective(s):

  1. The audience will gain a big picture understanding of the immense and varied benefits and implications of designing with data.
  2. Specific understanding of how data covers all aspects of a project, not just geometry, that extends into obtaining meaning and better decision-making on projects.
  3. Specific understanding of where data can provide continuity for the built project into structural health monitoring and maintenance that relates to the Owner’s needs and the environment.
  4. Specific understanding of security concerns as more data is shared that can extend over the life of a project.
