Ecological Blue Flag: Sustainable Construction for Costa Rican Projects

The Federated College of Engineers and Architects (CFIA), along with Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) and the Blue Flag Ecological Program, have established the XV Category of Sustainable Construction. This category aims to encourage, implement, and recognize architecture, engineering, and construction projects that resiliently and responsibly address the challenges of climate change. Moreover, it seeks to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, embraced by Costa Rica as part of the 2030 Agenda. The category is based on a cycle of continuous improvement and promotes good economic, social, and environmental practices in infrastructure design and construction. Three participation modalities are established: sustainable design, sustainable construction, and sustainable design and construction. Six main parameters are evaluated, including legal compliance, water and energy use, waste management, materials, and biodiversity. Stars are awarded to projects that meet mandatory parameters, as well as additional actions related to sustainability and community promotion.
