The Howard Street Tunnel Clearance Program will rehabilitate and modernize Baltimore’s historic 125-year-old Howard Street Tunnel and will directly enable the Port of Baltimore to expand operations by enabling the passage of double-stacked intermodal trains through the corridor.
The project involves complete invert lowering, and drainage improvements throughout the 1.7-mile masonry brick-lined tunnel while minimizing impact to rail service. This work could only be possible by employing innovative custom equipment and means & methods to remove, replace and lower the invert structure to increase the vertical clearance while returning the tracks to active service daily.
