Insights for Advancing Climate-Resilient Standards and Codes

Strategic Issues / Public Policy

This panel discussion will bring together key members of Canada’s Climate Resilient Built Environment Initiative from the National Research Council of Canada. The panelists include Ahmed Attar, Zoubir Lounis, Marianne Armstrong, and Jieying Zhang from NRC Canada. They will highlight critical milestones in the past years of this initiative, which has focused on research and developments to advance climate-resilient standards and codes in this era of climate change. They will also introduce lessons from this initiative to advance codes and standards by incorporating future climate projections to minimize natural disaster risks and reduce long-term losses and costs, support resilience for buildings and infrastructure, and ensure public safety and health in a changing climate. The discussion will dive into details from technical and process perspectives on some of the significant efforts during the last stage of this initiative, including the integration of climate change adaptation and resilience into the design of infrastructure, including bridges and buildings, and adapting Codes and Standards, and life-cycle assessment for resilient infrastructure bridging resilience and sustainability. This panel discussion offers transferable experiences and lessons for integrating climate science in developing design climatic data, advancing engineering design practice, and fostering more resilient and sustainable built environments.
