Mitigating Human Factor Errors in Structural Inspections

Successful arm's length, visual inspections of existing infrastructure is incumbent upon the ability, experience, and diligence of the inspector. Distortion Fatigue Cracking can be measured with modern LIDAR. There are many examples of 2D cracking quantification and comparing chronological epochs to derive the change in cracking. More importantly the distortion can be directly measured to identify areas exceeding design tolerances even before cracking appears. Measuring the distortion can also point to cracking and loose connections that may or may not have been noted in the visual inspection. Distortion can also point to the deleterious effect of section loss.
