Shaping the Future of Civil Engineering Education

State of the Industry / Profession

In the face of unrelenting change in technology and societal demands for engineering expertise, the entire engineering profession must come together to prepare the next generation of engineers who will solve the challenges of tomorrow. The shifts necessary to prepare the next generation will not occur naturally or quickly. This session focuses on current and future efforts that will best prepare future civil engineers.

The Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (CEBOK) was developed by ASCE to outline the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to exercise responsible charge in the practice of civil engineering. This session will explore how learning about great civil engineering projects and the CEBOK can be a tool for educators, mentors, and students to ensure students’ preparation for a successful career in civil engineering.

In addition, the session will explore the work of several engineering professional societies and stakeholders to recommend new approaches to the challenge of transforming engineering education for the next generation. A team of representatives from these groups identified several actions that will allow the engineering profession to adapt to the future needs of society, including:

· Develop and share a purpose-driven (rather than math-focused) vision for engineering.

· Seek grants and partnerships to attract more individuals, especially those from underrepresented groups, to the engineering profession.

· Embrace new market-driven approaches to engineering education to address skills gap.

This session will present actionable ideas for civil engineering practitioners, managers, and educators who can join the effort to better prepare the next generation of civil engineers to solve the challenges of tomorrow.
